Napalm Death es una banda de death metal y grindcore fundada en Birmingham, en Inglaterra, considerados los pioneros de este ultimo. Con un estilo hardcore punk y con voces guturales en sus primeros álbumes. Esta banda se vio muy influenciada por grupos como Dead Kennedys y Pentagram Chile. |La banda se formó en 1982 por Nic Bullen, Miles Ratledge y Justin Broadrick (futuro fundador de Godflesh), como un simple grupo de anarco-punk. En los principios de la banda, un número muy grande de músicos pasaron por ella, y para la grabación de su primer disco ya no quedaba ningún miembro original. En 1987 entraron en la banda Shane Embury (el único miembro que aun sigue en el grupo) al bajo, el batería Mick Harris (futuro creador de Scorn, Painkiller (el de Bill Laswell), etc), Lee Dorrian (futuro miembro de Cathedral) en las voces y Bill Steer (futuro líder de Carcass) a la guitarra. Con esta formación graban Scum, que fue el primer larga duración de la banda en su sonido Crust. En 1988 grabaron From Enslavement To Obliteration, un segundo álbum que se acerca un poco más que el Scum al sonido grind que quería la banda, con una producción mejorada que da mayor potencia a la música.

En 1990 entraron en la banda los guitarristas Jesse Pintado y Mitch Harris y el carismático vocalista Mark "Barney" Greenway, formación con la que Napalm Death graban Harmony Corruption, haciendo el primero de los numerosos cambios de estilo del grupo. Musicalmente este disco es puro death metal, seguramente debido a la producción de Scott Burns, productor de toda la escena death metal de Florida (Obituary, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse...) y a la voz mas gutural de Barney. Después del álbum "Harmony Corruption", Mick Harris se fue de la banda y entró el batería Danny Herrera, con el que grabaron el álbum Utopia Banished que salió en 1992 e incorporó más partes death metal, que continuaron en Fear, Emptiness, Despair en 1994, esta vez con un lado más groovy.

El álbum Diatribes que salió en 1996, es otro cambio considerable para Napalm Death: Diatribes es mucho más lento y groovy, y mezcla las influencias death metal del grupo con un lado casi industrial. Algunos fans de los primeros días los abandonaron con este disco, pero en general fue bastante exitoso. Los siguientes trabajos de la banda, Inside The Torn Apart (1997) y Words From The Exit Wound (1998) tomaron una distancia con la experimentación de los precedentes y anunciaron el regreso a un sonido más rápido y primitivo, que se concreta con Enemy Of The Music Business (2000) y Order Of The Leech (2002).

En 2004 grabaron Leaders Not Followers pt. 2, un disco de versiones donde sólo tocaban versiones de hardcore punk y metal underground de principios de los años 1980, como Kreator, Massacre, Sepultura y Agnostic Front. En 2005, después de haber pasado por una crisis (Jesse Pintado tuvo que dejar el grupo debido a su adicción al alcohol), Napalm Death vuelven más fuertes que nunca con el magistral The Code Is Red...Long Live The Code, donde regresan a un sonido más grindcore. En Junio del 2006 lanzan Smear Campaign. El ex-miembro Jesse Pintado murió poco tiempo después de grabar un disco con su otra banda Terrorizer, debido a un coma diabético.
